FRANKLIN FOOD BANK

Turning a blank wall into a place of welcome.

Through JK Gives Back, our team was connected with Franklin Food Bank through Raritan Valley Habitat for Humanity. The organization had a large, blank exterior wall with an opportunity to become something more than an empty surface—it could become a welcoming, joyful part of the community.

I saw an opportunity to create an illustration that felt colorful, optimistic, and connected to the spirit of the food bank. Rather than treating the wall as simply a space to decorate, I wanted the artwork to create a sense of warmth and belonging for the people who visit and interact with the organization every day.

The Concept

I developed the mural concept from the ground up, using illustration to create a visual language that felt approachable, energetic, and full of life. I then pitched the concept to the Franklin Food Bank and worked with the team to refine the direction into a mural that could translate successfully from a digital idea into a large-scale physical environment.

The final illustration was designed with both the viewer and the practical realities of painting in mind. Bold shapes, approachable forms, and a strong sense of color allowed the artwork to hold its own at a large scale while remaining inviting and accessible.

From Illustration to Wall

Once the concept was approved, I art directed the process of translating the illustration into a full-scale mural.

Our team refined and mapped the artwork into a paint-by-number system, creating a clear framework that allowed a larger group of volunteers and team members to participate in the painting process while maintaining the integrity of the original design.

To bring the illustration accurately onto the wall, we used VR technology to create a full-scale chalk outline. From there, the mural became a true team effort—multiple days of painting, layering color, refining edges, filling corners, and making countless small adjustments to ensure the finished piece stayed true to the original concept.

A Creative Idea Made for Community

What began as a blank exterior wall became an opportunity to create something tangible for the Franklin Food Bank and the people it serves.

For me, the most rewarding part of the project was seeing an illustration move beyond the screen and become part of a real environment. It was a chance to combine conceptual design, illustration, art direction, and hands-on making in service of something bigger than the work itself.

The finished mural is more than a painted wall. It’s a bright, welcoming piece of the Franklin Food Bank—and a reminder of what creative work can do when it is designed with community in mind.
